I predicted this acquisition on October 18, 2005. Here.
"As I'm reading the front page news articles at SYS-CON.com this morning I see two SOA Web Services stories which attract my attention.
The first one announcing the IBM's acquisition of DataPower Technologies (with lots of "SOA" "Web Services" and "XML" words spread and repeating inside the story.
The second article title reads as "Bowstreet Says They Contributed To SOA Web Services To Reach Mainstream."
Now this news sounds like "Hello, we are here too, we do SOA Web Services successfully and are actually one of the leaders in this market, is there anybody out there who is interested in buying us too?"
I don't know if Bowstreet is actually looking for a suitable buyer or if they are in the market for that matter, I have no idea. All I know is SOA vendor market is showing strong signs of consolidation, many smaller companies on the cross hairs or the larger ones (or the ones they think they are players). I also strongly believe that a lot of talking going on even as we speak which will lead to future press releases.
I think 2006 will be the year of "Enterprise Open Source" and newly defined and positioned "SOA Web Services."
