XML co-creator Tim Bray has fled Sun and Oracle – where he says he could have stayed – for Google Android and the title developer advocate to stick it to iPhone, which he labels a closed “sterile Disney-fied walled garden surrounded by sharp-toothed lawyers. The people who create the apps serve at the landlord’s pleasure and fear his anger. I hate it….Apple apparently thinks you can have the benefits of the Internet while at the same time controlling what programs can be run and what parts of the stack can be accessed and what developers can say to each other. I think they’re wrong and see this job as a chance to help prove it.” He’s staying in Canada.

Dan Lyons, the modern American Clark Kent known, loved and loathed as the Fake Steve Jobs, has been signed by EPIX, the online TV and film network, to create a half-hour Silicon Valley comedy series with Seinfeld writer Larry Charles called iCON, “a study of ego, power and greed.” Charles claimed in a press release that it will be “nothing less than a modern Citizen Kane.” The composite centerpiece of the “scabrous satire of Silicon Valley and its most famous citizen” is a guy named Tom Rhodes. iCon, by the way, was the name of that unauthorized biography that Jobs ordered off the shelves of Apple stores.

Black Duck Software, which provides comprehensive open source software services, reports that mobile open source thrived in 2009 even as the rest of the high-tech industry lagged behind on account of the recession. The software company also powers Koders.com, a code search engine for open source. It says it reviewed thousands of open source projects collected from 4,600 Internet sites to analyze open source projects targeting mobile platforms.

Apple’s patent suit against Google phone maker HTC is only the tip of the iceberg, according to Oppenheimer analyst Yair Reiner, who says Apple lawyers have been talking to other handset makers as well and that these discussions are “meaningfully disrupting the development roadmaps ifor would-be iPhone killers. Rival software and hardware teams are going back to the drawing board to look for workarounds…And strategy teams are working to chart OS strategies that are better hedged.” He thinks that they may abandon Android for Microsoft, its patent portfolio and “its willingness to join battle with customers that come under IP attack.”

Cryptzone Provides Mobile Security for iPhone Users

Now, users of the iPhone will be able to securely login to their company network to safely gain access to corporate information, email, calendar functions, etc. This development adds to the wide range of mobile platforms already supported by the AppGate Security Server, which includes Nokia Series 60 (Symbian) and Windows Mobile. "This is a much sought-after feature from our customers," says Tomas Olovsson, CTO at AppGate. "There are a lot of limitations on what applications can do on an iPhone, which has been a challenge for us as we developed this functionality. In the near future companies will use the iPhone as an integral part of the corporate infrastructure, further strengthening our position as the leading provider of mobile security solutions for businesses."

Kudos to JESS3 - a creative agency that specializes in web design, branding and data visualization - for this excellent ‘State of the Internet’ presentation. When you take a step back and consider the mind boggling numbers presented throughout this vid, you realise just how far we’ve come since Nicholas Negroponte of MIT Media Labs said back in ‘97 that “the internet was the most overhyped, underestimated phenomenon in history.” Hindsight is a wonderful thing but how must the guys at Newsweek feel when they look back through their archives and read this piece from Clifford Stoll, published in the magazine on February 27th 1995.

Apple Sues Google Phone Maker

Apple said Tuesday that it filed suit against HTC, the Taiwan company that’s making Google’s Nexus One phone, for infringing on 20 Apple patents. Apple said the patents are on iPhone’s user interface, underlying architecture and hardware. It didn’t say which of the smartphones HTC makes infringe and didn’t mention a word about Google. HTC made the first Android phone and now makes a bunch of them. Apple fired out of both barrels of its shotgun. The suit was filed with both the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) and in the federal court in Delaware. In a statement CEO Steve Jobs said, “We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We’ve decided to do something about it. We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours.” Apple and Nokia are also in litigation over patents.

Netsize previews survey results at M-Days mobile conference and trade show in Munich, Germany

Munich, Germany, January 28, 2010 -- Netsize, a leading mobile commerce and communications enabler, today revealed the first results of the Mobile Trends Survey 2010. Drawing from an online survey of 1,000+ professionals and practitioners, the survey provides insights into key trends that top the industry agenda, including the advance of mobile applications stores, progress towards global mobile commerce and the pivotal importance of mobile as a means to bridge our virtual and physical worlds.

Using the occasion of M-Days - one of Europe's biggest mobile industry events and exhibitions held in Munich, Germany - Netsize provided conference attendees, industry influencers and key bloggers a sneak peek into the controversial survey results, starting with respondents' views on app store leaders and the enablers that give them and their offers the competitive edge.

According to the survey, the vast majority (87 percent) of respondents believe the Apple App Store will be the most successful app store in the mobile space. Google's Android Market is a distant second (60 percent), followed by Nokia's Ovi Store (30 percent) and RIM's BlackBerry App World (27 percent). Surprisingly, applications stores run by mobile operators finished low in the list, indicating that platform providers and handset makers may well dominate the space for a time to come.

When asked to rate the unique selling proposition of application stores over other software distribution and sales channels, 65 percent of respondents put convenience ("everything in one place") at the top of the list. This was followed by compatibility "software applications specific to the device"), choice ("a long tail of thousands of applications to choose from"), and ease of payment ("operator billing, for example").

Is a Smartphone a Digital Signage Player Too?

Like many people in the industry I have been watching the evolution of these phones and thinking they will pretty quickly get to the point that they could be fully realized digital signage playback devices. This one is capable of playing out 720P HD, the report says. However, the question was always whether that made any sense if small form factor PCs were available for $300-$400 and these handsets were $600. Presumably, the cost breakdown here is for very high volumes and does not include assembly. So baking all that in, these are units that would still probably be more than a very capable small-form factor PC. But if the right deal could be worked with a carrier, and therefore the subsidized handset costs kicked in, these things are now at a point where testing one would not be the goofiest thing ever tried. The open question, probably among many, is whether a smartphone designed to play videos and Flash 10 now and then would behave nicely if it was asked to do that over and over and over, 20 hours or more each day.

The aggregate value of deals done in this segment was $3.21 billion in 2008 and $5.98 billion in 2009, an increase of 86%. Several large deals in this segment contributed to the increase in aggregate value, including Adobe's acquisition of Omniture for $1.6 billion; Google's acquisition of Admob for $750 million; and VivaKi's acquisition of Razorfish for $530 million. All three of the aforementioned deals exceeded 2008's largest transaction in the E-marketing & Search segment, which was Microsoft's acquisition of Greenfield Online for $460 million.

Apple Tries Pissing on Google’s Shoes

Hours before Google was due to trot out its Nexus One Google Phone Tuesday, Apple sent out a statement saying that more than three billion apps have been downloaded in the roughly 18 months that its iTunes App Store has been open. Reminding Google who’s king of the hill, Apple CEO Steve Jobs added, “This is like nothing we’ve ever seen before. The revolutionary App Store offers iPhone and iPod touch users an experience unlike anything else available on other mobile devices, and we see no signs of the competition catching up anytime soon.”

Engadget Named Official Blog Partner of CES 2010

AOL announced today that the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) selected Engadget, as the Official Blog Partner of the 2010 International CES to be held January 7-10, 2010 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
